Memorial Candles for the Loss of a Child

There are no right words for losing a child, at any age. A candle can’t fill that silence, but it can hold their name: a small light in the house that says they were here, and they are still loved. For parents, grandparents and siblings, and for anyone sending love to a family that has lost a son or daughter.

For their family

A memorial gift for parents who lost a child

Many bereaved parents say the hardest part, after the loss itself, is how quickly people stop saying their child’s name. A remembrance candle does the opposite. It carries the name, so it tells them their son or daughter is still remembered, and it gives them somewhere to put the love that has nowhere else to go.

You don’t need to find perfect words. A name, a date and a few words of your own are enough. We ship it straight to their door.

Three ways families start. Change anything before you order.

A candle with their name

A candle with their name

Their name with a small symbol, such as a teddy bear, a heart or a dove, and a line like “Loved beyond words, missed beyond measure.” The simplest and most personal choice.

Pregnancy and infant loss

For a baby who was loved before they arrived

Miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss are often grieved quietly, with few keepsakes and fewer people who know what to say. A candle with the baby’s name, their due date or a simple “Held for a Moment, Loved Forever” gives that love a place in the home.

Every October 15, families around the world light a candle at 7 pm local time for the Wave of Light, part of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Many light theirs on the baby’s due date or birthday, too.

The hardest days

Dates that are hard after losing a child

Their birthday and the anniversary of their death, which some families call an angel day, come back every year. So do Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, the holidays, and the milestones they would have reached: a first day of school, a graduation, the age their friends are now.

A candle sent a few days before one of these dates tells the family their child is remembered by others too. If the funeral is still ahead, see our candles for a funeral service.

Your note

What to write to parents who lost a child

  • “Thinking of [name] today, and of all of you.”
  • “[Name] is so loved, and will always be remembered.”
  • “There are no words. Just love, for you and for [name].”
  • “No need to reply. I just wanted you to know we’re holding you close.”
  • “I’ll never forget [a memory of them].”

Use their child’s name. It is almost always a comfort to hear it. We don’t include gift notes at checkout, so send your words separately, or put a short line on the candle under the name.

Why a candle

Why a memorial candle

Grief for a child doesn’t end; it changes shape. A candle gives it a ritual that can last for years: lit on the hard days, rested in between. Ours are 13.75 oz of 100% soy wax with a zinc and lead-free cotton wick, hand-poured in the USA, and burn for 60–80 hours, so it can be lit again and again.

Questions about child loss memorial candles

What do you give parents who have lost a child?

Something that says their child’s name. A personalized memorial candle with the name, a date or a short line gives the family a small ritual for the hard days, and tells them their child is remembered.

Is it okay to say the child’s name?

For most bereaved parents, yes. Hearing their child’s name, or seeing it on a keepsake, is a comfort and a sign that others remember too.

What can I write on a candle for a baby who died?

Their name with a short line such as “Held for a Moment, Loved Forever”, “Our Little Angel” or “Forever Our Baby”. You can add a date, such as their birthday or due date.

Can I add a photo or an ultrasound image?

Yes. Choose the photo label in the personalizer and upload any picture. You see the finished candle on screen before you order, and we email a proof before printing.

Can you ship it directly to the family?

Yes. Enter their address as the shipping address at checkout. Orders ship in 4–6 days.
